Course Description

This course will include advance vocabulary while introducing the student to ASL storytelling. There will be a focus on formal and informal receptive and expression communication. The student will also develop language skills pertaining to more abstract communication, such as ideas and concepts.

Storytelling is a foundational aspect of Deaf culture. This course equips the student with the advanced communication skills required to transition between informal and formal registers, enhancing their ability to engage with the Deaf community and their culture.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the Discussions for this course cover specific topics and enable the student to interact with study materials and his/her peers. For each Discussion, the student will follow the unique instructions for each prompt with a thorough response of at least 200 words. Current MLA-formatting should be used for all in-text citations, and a citation list must be included at the end of each post that uses sources. The student will also reply to 2 peers with specific observations, additions, questions, analyses, and references to resources. Each reply should be a minimum of 100 words. If sources are used, the student will follow current MLA format to provide in-text citations and a citation list at the end of each reply post.

Video Discussion: Food Costs and Shopping Preferences

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will record and post a video of himself/herself responding to the questions provided in the discussion prompt using American Sign Language (ASL). Each element of the discussion prompt must be addressed completely and supported with appropriate study materials. The student must also reply to 2 peers, responding to the provided prompts. Each reply must be a minimum of 100 words. 

Discussion: Reflection

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will choose from creating a written post of at least 200 words or recording a video response. The student must ensure the post or video presents a thorough response that either meets the required word count of at least 200 words for the written response or follows the script and thoroughly answers each question for the video response. All elements of the prompt should be answered completely with the use of study materials in either form of the submission. If sources are used, the student will follow current MLA-format, including in-text citations and a Works Cited list at the end of the post. The student will also reply to 2 peers with specific observations, additions, questions, analyses, and references to resources. Each reply should be at least 100 words. If sources are used, the student will follow current MLA format to provide in-text citations and a Works Cited list at the end of each reply.

Signing Videos Assignments (3)

The student will record and upload a video demonstrating the American Sign Language skills acquired throughout the module. The content of the video should reflect the learning materials and skills (accurate signs, vocabulary, structure, pacing/rhythm, non-manual markers, etc.) from each associated module and follow the provided instructions and length/content parameters. The student must be fully visible in the video from the waist up, with good lighting, camera angle/distance, and an uncluttered background. The student must include any provided templates. 

The student will write a 2-page report on a topic of his/her choice directly relating to a Deaf or hard of hearing individual, Deaf culture, Deaf advocacy/law, or other ASL topic approved by the professor. The paper will include an introduction with a thesis statement, body paragraphs, and a conclusion that aligns with the assignment instructions. The student will research the topic using quality sources and include quotes from at least 3 sources to support his/her claims. Scripture may be included in addition to the other required sources. All references should use proper MLA citations, including a Works Cited page. The student should use clear, logical organization throughout and follow all writing expectations outlined in the grading rubric. The paper should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins, 12-point Times New Roman font, and correct MLA formatting. 

Sharing Your Testimony Assignments (3)

The Sharing Your Testimony Assignment consists of 3 stages for the student to share their testimony using American Sign Language: Sharing Your Testimony: Rough Draft Assignment, Sharing Your Testimony: Glossing Assignment, and the Signing Video: Sharing Your Testimony Assignment. These assignments will require the student to describe their life before Christ, how they came to know Christ, and an explanation of their life after accepting Christ.

Sharing Your Testimony: Rough Draft Assignment

This assignment is the first of 3 stages where the student will share his/her testimony using American Sign Language (ASL). For this assignment, the student will write a response to a list of provided prompts in English sentences. This assignment should be typed and submitted as a Word document via the submission link in Canvas.

Sharing Your Testimony: Glossing Assignment

In this assignment, the student will provide a typed gloss for each English sentence that was created in the Sharing Your Testimony: Rough Draft Assignment. The student will use this glossing draft to later create his/her submission for the Signing Video: Sharing Your Testimony Assignment. This assignment should be typed and submitted as a Word document via the submission link in Canvas.

Signing Video: Sharing Your Testimony Assignment

In this assignment, the student will use the testimony shared in the Sharing Your Testimony: Glossing Assignment and record a video of himself/herself presenting that testimony. The content of the video should reflect the learning materials the student has interacted with and mastered throughout the course. The student must be fully visible in the video from the waist up, with good lighting, camera angle/distance, and an uncluttered background. 

The student will complete the Learn activities for each module, which may include the following items: ReadRead & InteractWatch, and Explore. After completing each of these activities, the student will complete a quiz verifying completion of these elements of study. Each quiz will cover the Learn material for the assigned module. Each quiz will contain 3 true/false questions, have a 30-minute time limit, and allow 1 attempt.

Quiz: Signing Naturally Self-Assessment

The student will complete a Quiz: Signing Naturally Self-Assessment. The quiz consists of 8 multiple-choice questions and 1 essay question, has a 1-hour time limit, and allows for 1 attempt.
