Rationale

The purpose of this course is to become familiar with a variety of illicit and licit drugs and drug-related issues, to understand the social impact of drugs, to recognize the dangers imposed not only to an individual but also to the community due to the misuse of drugs, and to relate positive health behaviors for combating drug misuse.

Discussions (1)

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to participate in 1 Discussion during this course. The discussion includes two parts: a thread of at least 300 words, which answers the discussion prompt and includes Scripture/biblical references and at least two additional references to support the information, and replies to two classmates’ threads, which must be at least 150 words each. Additionally, the student must respond to all questions posted by the instructor and classmates in his/her thread. (FSLO: SSI 1, 2, 3 & 4 and CT 2, 3 & 4)

Textbook Reading

Throughout this course, the student will complete Read & Interact Assignment textbook readings. These readings will be accessed through the McGraw Hill Connect platform located in the Module’s Learn sections and the Assignments page in Canvas. These readings are labeled with the author(s)’ name(s) and the required chapter number. The student will be required to read and interact with the textbook. There are points associated with each of these reading assignments. At the end of each assigned chapter, Connect will automatically sync the grade for the reading to Canvas.

In order to complete any Connect Homework Assignments, the student will need to first complete all Read & Interact Textbook Assignments.

The Impact of Drugs/Alcohol on Your Life: A Personal Reflection Essay Assignment

The student will write an essay reflecting on how drugs/alcohol have impacted their life or family history. The assignment should be at least 8-10 sentences structured in paragraphs, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, and 12-point Times New Roman font. 

Case Study Assignments (3)

There will be 3 Case Study assignments during the course. The student is required to watch a video or complete outside research to analyze the issue. The student will then thoroughly discuss the the issues using moral and biblical positions, evidence based information, and public health issues surrounding the topic in each case analysis. The student will present the case in paragraph form using current APA formatting (Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1” margins and double-spaced). A title page and reference page must be included. The student must use at least 2 scholarly references in addition to the Bible. The body of each case study analysis must be at least 1 page. An abstract page is not necessary for these assignments. Capstone Interview and Report Assignment (1)

As a culminating project, the student will incorporate the knowledge gained in the class and an interview into a Capstone Interview and Report. There will be 1 Capstone assignment during the course. The student is required to complete an interview and write a report based on the interview and course material. The student will present the report in paragraph form using current APA formatting (Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1” margins and double-spaced). A title page and reference page must be included. The student must use at least 2 scholarly references in addition to the Bible. The body of each case study analysis must be at least 2 pages. An abstract page is not necessary for these assignments. Quizzes (4)

There will be 4 open-book/open-notes quizzes in this course. Each quiz will contain 50 multiple-choice questions that cover the textbook readings. There will be a 1-hour and 15-minute time limit. One point will be deducted for every minute the student goes over this time limit.
