Experience Medical Missions
As a LUCOM student, you’re invited to be part of a vision – developed in partnership with Liberty University’s LU Send – that encourages you to serve others and share the Gospel through medical missions.
LUCOM offers faculty-led mission trips where you’ll serve with established mission clinics and support outreach efforts in local communities.
During these trips, you may also connect with local mission organizations and hospitals, creating opportunities for one-month fourth-year rotations in mission hospital settings.
And, if you want to pursue missional living and medical practice more intentionally in the United States or internationally, we offer a medical mission certificate program.
You can also learn through conferences and speakers focused on medical missions.

What Our Students Say
Medical Missions Certificate (Non-Credit)
Liberty’s Global Health certificate program is for students interested in growing in their missional living and preparing to serve God and others through the missional practice of medicine. Upon successful completion of this non-credit program, students are awarded a digital badge. An application for the certificate will be provided in individual classes. There are three components to this certificate program:
Preclinical Summer Elective
This is a roughly 3-week long, in-person, classroom intensive during the summer for incoming 1st-year students or students who have just completed their 1st year at LUCOM. The elective focuses on the formation of the heart and mind around God’s purposes for holistic health and our part in His purposes. We consider a biblical foundation, historical perspective, cultural considerations, and strategic approaches for medical mission. Elective activities include readings, discussions, assignments, presentations, and mentorship.
Dates and additional information (including the application) regarding the upcoming summer elective are communicated with accepted, incoming 1st-year students and current 1st-year students in the spring of each year.
Online Courses
These three asynchronous online courses (self-paced) are part of the School of Divinity’s Biblical Studies offerings in Liberty University’s Continuing Education online programs. One course is prescribed, and students can select the other two from among three options. Course information will be provided in the application information.
LUCOM-approved clinical experiences
Students must have at least 2 LUCOM-approved clinical experiences. And, at least one of these experiences must be a month-long missional medical elective in either an international Christian mission hospital (e.g., one of the hospitals in Kenya through World Medical Mission) or a Christian domestic health clinic (e.g., Beacon). The other experience could be one of LUCOM’s short-term medical mission trips.
Additional International Clinical Experiences
Students may pursue LUCOM approval to receive credit for clinical rotation electives at other international sites. All clinical rotation electives must receive LUCOM Clinical Education approval and involve administrative processes, including affiliation agreements and preceptor credentialing.
All non-LUCOM-sponsored clinical rotations/experiences fulfilling the medical mission certificate requirements must be approved by LUCOM global medicine leadership.
