Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) student-doctors presented research during the annual Experimental Biology (EB) conference last month held in Orlando, Fla.
The annual conference is often regarded as the largest interdisciplinary meeting of its kind, bringing together 12,000 life sciences and biomedical researchers from more than 65 countries. Research presented spans from anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, investigative pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. “The conference featured lectures, workshops, symposia, and more than 5,000 poster presentations,” said Joseph W. Brewer, PhD, associate dean of research at LUCOM. “It provided excellent educational and professional opportunities for our students.”
Liberty osteopathic medical students presented nine posters throughout the conference. Eleanor Lee, Juhie Patel, Damir Pogarcic, Daniel Quan, Christian Rose, Kelsie Smith, and Kristin Wiley all presented posters about research they have been performing with Joseph C. Gigliotti, PhD, assistant professor of physiology. “Dr. Gigliotti and his team use mouse models to investigate hypertension, kidney and liver function, and the effects of diet on health and disease,” said Dr. Brewer.
Joseph Carter, Kane Smith, and Kathleen Stenlund presented posters concerning studies they have been doing with R. James Swanson, PhD, professor of anatomy. “Under Dr. Swanson’s mentorship, these students have been developing an approach to explore the effects of e-cigarette vapors on mouse embryonic development,” said Dr. Brewer.
The Experimental Biology conference is hosted by five scientific societies: American Association of Anatomists, American Physiological Society, American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, American Society of Investigative Pathology, and the American Society of Pharmaceuticals and Experimental Therapeutics.
