Student organization makes an impact at pancake fundraiser

Student-doctors at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) came back from their Thanksgiving break with a mission to help others.

On Nov. 30 at the Center for Medical and Health Sciences, LUCOM-Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) raised $446 for the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation at its second annual Pancakes for Parkinson’s event.

“The event turned out much better than we hoped for a rainy evening after Thanksgiving. We had nearly 80 people attend, and we raised more than we did last year,” said LUCOM-SOMA Vice President Pranamya Mahankali, Class of 2018.

For $5, visitors enjoyed all-you-can-eat pancakes and a buffet of toppings. LUCOM-SOMA members also handed out informational materials about Parkinson’s to everyone who attended.

Their goal was that each person left the event with a full stomach and more awareness about Parkinson’s.

“Parkinson’s doesn’t have a cure yet, and there are a lot of individuals living with this disease in our country. By fundraising to help promote research and education, we are creating awareness. We hope that someday there will be a cure,” said Mahankali.
