Student-doctors make an impact at annual “Superhero 5K”

While Batman and Spiderman may be the first names that come to mind, a group of Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) student-doctors reminded the community that physicians are superheroes too.
33 LUCOM student-doctors participated in the Superhero 5K on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Lynchburg. The event is a fundraiser for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). CASA of Central Virginia advocates for the best interest of abused and neglected children in the 24th Judicial District of Virginia.
“We wanted to support CASA because of the importance of the work that they do with kids in the foster care system. As a student body, we think it is important to reach out and support our community, especially those in our community who cannot take care of themselves,” said LUCOM-Student Government Association (SGA) treasurer Katrina Culmer, Class of 2018.
Many participants in the race wore costumes featuring their favorite superhero. LUCOM student-doctors decided to dress up as “everyday superheroes” and wore their white coats that symbolize their commitment to caring for others.
“I think it’s important to show the community that physicians are there for the community and want to improve the health of the community – not just save lives through an emergency room-type setting,” said Culmer.
The LUCOM group raised about $2,100 for CASA of Central Virginia, through a bake sale and donations from LUCOM professional organizations.
