Earlier today, Nov. 11, Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) hosted one of the frontrunners in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, Ben Carson, M.D.
The retired neurosurgeon started out his day speaking at Liberty University convocation. LUCOM student-doctors attended in their white coats symbolizing their commitment to caring for others. The student-doctors were given a special seating area in front of the stage.
Later in the day, Dr. Carson visited the Center for Medical and Health Sciences.
Before a tour of the facility, Dr. Carson’s campaign chose to hold a press conference and took questions from local and national media outlets. One reporter asked what he would say to the student-doctors at LUCOM who are in training to become physicians.
“There are few careers more rewarding than medicine,” replied Dr. Carson.
Following the press conference, LUCOM Dean Ronnie Martin, D.O., took Dr. Carson on a tour of the Center for Standardized Patients and Simulation (SIM lab) where student-doctors learn in simulated environments as well as interact with trained actors.
Dr. Carson also visited the LUCOM’s Medical Library, the Anatomy lab and both Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) labs. In both of those labs, he addressed student-doctors about his memories of medical school and the impact their careers have.
“As I look back on it, there is nothing that begins to compare with the satisfaction of bringing someone quality of life,” said Dr. Carson.
