Tim Clinton, EdD, visited LUCOM this month to lead an encouraging convocation message to faculty, staff, and student-doctors. Dr. Clinton is the president of the nearly 50,000-member American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC) and is a licensed-professional counselor as well as marriage and family therapist. He has authored over 20 books on faith and mental health issues.
Dr. Clinton’s message reflected on the importance of being anxious for nothing and how often times people tend to let stress be the determining factor for various outcomes throughout their life. “One of the most distinguishing characteristics of success is the ability to control your thoughts,” said Dr. Clinton. “It’s the ability to center your thoughts, eliminate any and all distractions, and focus.”
With a scripture reference, Dr. Clinton focused on Philippians 4:4-9 and as an example spoke about athletes having the ability to achieve success when the skill gap narrows. “For an athlete, the higher he or she goes in athletics, the smaller the skill gap is and success comes when they learn to control their mind. The ability to manage their mind and maintain their coolness in the midst of great challenge is the core of what allows that athlete to persevere,” added Dr. Clinton.
Specifically addressing the student-doctors, Dr. Clinton highlighted that the same thing should be done in their spiritual walk. “In our everyday life with God, we have to put time and effort into that relationship every moment and every minute.” Reminding everyone that life is not meant to be done alone in isolation, Dr. Clinton also said, “Life is all about relationships, you get them right and you’ll be blessed. The most important relationship that one can have is with their Heavenly Father.”
Scripture highlights
- Belief. “Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” Philippians 4:4-5
- Pray/Focus. “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ” – Philippians 4:6-7
- Think. “Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” – Philippians 4:8
- Do. “Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” – Philippians 4:9
Dr. Clinton also serves as professor of Counseling and Pastoral Care at Liberty University and the executive director of its Center for Counseling and Family Studies.
