LUCOM professor shares military knowledge with student-doctors

From high school graduation to multiple military bases and beyond, a Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) professor is helping guide student-doctors by sharing the twists and turns of his 28-year career in the U.S. Navy.

David Klink, D.O., reviews OMMDavid Klink, D.O., Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Department of Specialty Medicine, walked student-doctors through his career on September 21. The LUCOM-American Military Osteopathic Physicians (AMOPS) sponsored the session called “Life as a Military Physician”.

Dr. Klink just retired from the U.S. Navy this past July. “The privilege of taking care of the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our freedoms is inexpressible,” said Dr. Klink.

Dr. Klink spoke with heart and enthusiasm remembering his one-of-a-kind experiences, including his training as a Navy scuba diver in Panama City. “I was trained as a Navy diver, got to go underway on submarines, and did two fellowships at one of the best eye institutes in the world. None of that would have happened if I hadn’t been in the Navy,” he said.

Dr. Klink says there are some trade offs. While the money for school and living expenses is a big plus, he says relocating every few years can be tough on some families. “However, if it’s a good match with their needs and desires, a military medical career can be enormously rewarding,” concluded Dr. Klink.
