What if students could earn their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Biomedical Sciences from Liberty University, start medical school one year early? 10 applicants have the chance to experience that in the fall semester as they were hosted at Liberty University College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) for the LU MED 3+1 Accelerated Pathway interviews in early February.

10 eligible applicants from Liberty’s B.S., program were accepted into the Class of 2029. This is the third year that the LU MED 3+1 Accelerated Pathway has been proposed to students on main campus. This year’s 10 students that were accepted into the program are the most in the three years of the accelerated pathway.

LU MED 3+1 is an accelerated pathway between Liberty University’s School of Health Sciences and LUCOM that offers a distinct advantage to outstanding undergraduate students who wish to become osteopathic physicians.

Qualifying LU MED 3+1 students will complete their first three years at the undergraduate level and begin their fourth year as a first year LUCOM (OMS-I) student. This fast-tracked pathway allows medical students to graduate with a B.S. degree and an Osteopathic (D.O.) degrees in seven years instead of the traditional eight.

The interviews were held on the first week of February. Three students had their interview on Thursday remaining seven had theirs on Friday. The interview began with a welcome session in the morning and the interviews with faculty members immediately following. After the interview portion of the visit, there was a photoshoot with the students and the day ended with a tour of LUCOM, lunch and a closing session in the afternoon.

Interested students may ask themselves, ‘are there any other benefits besides beginning a year early?’ One of the biggest advantages is that the MCAT requirement is waived. Another is the B.S. degree requirements are satisfied by the successful completion of OMS-I classes.

To be considered for the LU MED program students must meet various requirements like having all prerequisite sciences completed on the residential campus at Liberty University, as well as have no record of withdrawals from any prerequisite courses. The students must also earn and maintain a minimum 3.7 science GPA prior to receiving an invitation to interview for the program.
