One of the top leaders at Liberty University visited the College of Osteopathic Medicine (LUCOM) for weekly convocation and helped student-doctors understand the vision LU founder Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr. had years ago.
Dr. Ron Hawkins, LU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, discussed what he called “The Miracle at the Bottom of the Hill.” He recalled the very early days of LU and the times Dr. Falwell talked about LU’s robust future, both on campus and online.
“None of us really believed it would happen. But what was important was that he believed it would happen,” said Dr. Hawkins. “In the midst of the impossible, he dreamed the dream.”
Dr. Hawkins referred to Deuteronomy chapter 8 as he spoke about Dr. Falwell’s God-driven mission.
“He was possessed with the idea that God had called him to accomplish something. But he also believed firmly that if he was going to accomplish something, he needed to heed the admonition in Deuteronomy and, ‘Forget not the Lord your God,’” said Dr. Hawkins.
Just as Dr. Falwell kept his focus on God as he oversaw LU, Dr. Hawkins reminded student-doctors to remember the Lord as well, especially when they officially start their careers as physicians.
“You have amazing opportunities as physicians. But you must never forget that the gifts you have are a calling from God.” Dr. Hawkins.
