American Red Cross Swim Classes: Summer 2018

Our swim classes are conducted through the American Red Cross and have been designed to uniquely fit all levels of swimmers. You may have never been in a pool before or you could have grown up on a competitive swim team. No matter what your level is, we have a swim class for you. We have four very talented and dedicated instructors who will work with you to provide a clear path to achieve your goals. We hope you will join us!

Time and Location:

  • All adult group classes are held in the LaHaye Aquatics Center, time TBD.
  • All children group classes are held at Davids Place pool from 8:00am-10:00am.

1 Week Session: 4 Group Lessons / 45 minutes each

PRIVATE Swim Lessons Description

BEGINNER: Level 1 (Foundation) and Level 2 (Learn to Swim)

Level 1: Swimmers will learn to overcome any fear of water. They will also learn breathing control, how to float with aid, how to swim the front crawl and backstroke with aid, and how to tread water. 

Level 2: Swimmers will learn rotary breathing, how to float, how to swim the front crawl and backstroke, and focus on specific techniques for treading water (modified scissor kick, modified breastroke kick, rotary kick). 

INTERMEDIATE: Level 3 (Stroke Development) and Level 4 (Stroke Proficiency)

Level 3: Swimmers will become proficient at front crawl and backstroke. They will also learn elementary backstroke, breastroke, and sidestroke. Along with the specific strokes, they will learn how to do front and back open turns. 

Level 4: Swimmers will refine their front crawl, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke, and breastroke. They will begin to learn butterfly and flip turns (front and back). 

ADVANCED: Fitness Swimming and Pre-Lifeguarding

Fitness Swimming: Swimmers will focus on aerobic exercise, lap swimming techniques, and other techniques for competitive swimming such as triathlon and sprinting.

Pre-Lifeguarding: Swimmers will prepare for the lifeguard swim test, which consists of a 500 meter swim, 5 minutes of treading water, and a brick rescue from the 12ft end of the pool. They will also practice lifeguard skills such as shallow water rescue, head, neck and back techniques, and passive drowning rescues.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Classes

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Class is open to students, faculty and staff of Liberty University for $125. The class will take place between June 13-16, July 11-14, and August 6-9 at the LaHaye Aquatics Center.
 
Required class meeting times for the certification courses:
  • Wednesday, 4:00-8:00pm
  • Thursday, 4:00-8:00pm
  • Friday, 4:00-9:00pm
  • Saturday, 11:00am-5:30pm
Please register at the LaHaye Recreation and Fitness Center front desk two weeks prior to the course start date.

Lifeguard 

We are looking for individuals to provide a safe environment for patrons while working with a dedicated team. You must be American Red Cross Lifeguard/CPR certified. If you are interested please email Emily Martin and apply to the Lifeguard position through the Human Resources website. 

Water Safety Instructor

We are looking for individuals to provide American Red Cross Swim Lessons to students, faculty, staff and children. You must be American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and CPR certified. If you are interested please apply to the Lifeguard position through the Human Resources website.
