Adjusting to a virtual learning environment can be a difficult transition to navigate. Above all, we want to assure you that you know you are not alone. We are here to help! Please consider these tips on academic success in a virtual learning environment.

Preparing for Virtual Exams

Near the end of the semester, final exams are around the corner. With virtual learning, is your professor sticking to the Registrar’s final exam schedule, picking a different time, or giving you several days to complete it? Regardless, make sure to create a schedule for all of your exams and prepare accordingly. For more information on test taking strategies, please visit our website on Test Taking Tips.

Utilize Effective Study Techniques

Use your time wisely and study smarter, not harder. For instance, create or join virtual study groups to quiz each other and connect with other classmates. Use mnemonic devices to improve memory and use SQ4R and active reading study strategies to improve retention. Study in the morning or afternoon hours when your mind is more alert.

Stay Focused and Organized

When learning from home, it is imperative to find a distraction free zone. First, find a quiet space that is always designated as your work space. Shut the door, use a white noise machine, listen to instrumental music, and design the space for getting focused work done. Agree on scheduled work time with those around you and stick to them. Set a goal for each study session such as “read two chapters”, and don’t leave until you finish the goal. Once you complete each goal, reward yourself by taking a break or watching a short TV show before getting back to it. Above all else, turn your phone off or leave it in another room!

Manage your Anxiety

When it comes to academic stress, a lack of preparation is the biggest contributor to anxiety. One of the best solutions is to sit down and do the work! Battle your negative thoughts and focus on what to be grateful for. Pray and apply Scripture. Seek support from friends and family. Remember your successes and don’t compare yourself to others. Also, don’t neglect your self-care. Get plenty of sleep, eat a well-balanced diet, avoid caffeine and sugar, and enjoy some outside exercise! Small amounts of stress is normal, and even healthy. However, if your anxiety becomes uncontrollable, seek out the proper help from mental health professionals.
