About the House of Representatives

The Liberty University Student Representative Branch allows students to make a real difference on our campus. The House of Representatives serves as one of the two houses in the Legislative Branch and is comprised of both Residence Hall and Commuter Representatives. Each residence hall on campus elects one Hall Representative in the fall to represent their hall in the House of Representatives. Commuter Representatives are elected by commuter students at large and serve all commuter students in the House of Representatives.

The House meets every other week and is a place for students to share ideas, collaborate, and grow as they serve the student body. Representatives should join a Committee where legislation is crafted, refined, and voted on.

Hello everyone! My name is Jacob O’Fiel and I am your Speaker of the House of Representatives this school year. I am from Forest, Virginia, but spent my younger years in Keller, Texas. I am an Eagle Scout and second-year student here at LU studying politics and policy with minors in journalism and international relations. This year I am excited to lead the House in crafting legislation that will bring positive change on campus for all in the Liberty University family. In addition to this, I also plan to introduce new initiatives for house representatives – including a twice monthly legislative workshop, office hours to meet and discuss legislative ideas and more promotion of legislation passed throughout the year.

Being a Representative

Term

The length of one term for a Representative is one year. Representatives may renew their membership at the end of the year.

Responsibilities

• Meet with students you represent to hear their concerns and ideas.
• Collaborate with other Representatives in a Committee to turn ideas into legislation.
• Attend bi-weekly House meetings where legislation is discussed and voted upon.
• Craft impactful legislation and advocate for it to your peers and the University’s Administration.
• Participate and volunteer in SGA events and activities.

CSER

Representatives may receive CSER credit. Regular attendance is taken at meetings, and Representatives must faithfully attend SGA meetings, events, and related activities.
