LU-LCA Quick Reference Guide

On Friday, September 4, 2015, Liberty University announced important changes to its Local High School Affiliate Scholarship Programs. These programs are being phased out at the end of the current academic year. Over the last 10 years, Liberty has provided over $53.4 million in scholarship assistance to graduates of certain local, private schools.

We are pleased to announce that existing scholarship credits for currently enrolled students at Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) will not be reduced, and earned portions will be enhanced for some students now enrolled at LCA who will graduate from LCA.  Also nothing changes for students who were enrolled at LCA before January of 2012 or who were attending high school at one of our local affiliate Christian schools on September 1, 2015.  The changes will also impact those enrolling after September 1, 2015 with no new awards being earned for simply enrolling after September 1 and graduating from these schools.  Those who enrolled in LCA between January 24, 2012 and September 1, 2015 will no longer earn scholarship credits for completing grade years at LCA after the conclusion of the 2015-16 school year.

The Local High School Affiliate Scholarship Programs were created in the 1990s to assist young people in the Lynchburg area with the cost of their education at Liberty University. At that time, enrollment was down at LCA and LU and facilities were in poor condition at both schools.  The scholarship achieved one of its purposes by increasing attendance at LCA.  Liberty was able to finance the program by filling empty seats with commuters who graduated from LCA.  The original reasons for creating the scholarship program no longer existed about ten years later but the program continued with some variations until the present day and most students will continue to receive benefits long into the future because of grandfathering provisions.

Liberty University has grown to become the largest university in Virginia in recent years. It has constructed new academic, athletic, and residential facilities at a rapid pace to accommodate the growth but still has been forced to turn away thousands of students who applied to attend Liberty. The new scholarship programs will better distribute the financial assistance Liberty provides to local young people, to those in need, and to those who perform well academically.

Liberty has a long history of keeping education affordable and providing generous financial assistance to its students. Our goal is to continue that tradition and to provide even more assistance — and to do it in the fairest and most equitable manner possible, as Liberty strives to fulfill its mission of providing our students with a world-class Christian education.

The attached flow chart provides a quick reference summary to help families identify where each of their children now stand with the LU-LCA scholarship program.  Liberty University wishes to emphasize several points:

(1) This scholarship program was changed effective January 24, 2012 from the original package that gave LCA high school students 25% LU tuition scholarships for each year they attended high school at LCA.  The new package grandfathered all existing LCA students and granted new LCA students scholarship credits of 10% of their Liberty tuition for each K-12 grade they completed at LCA.

(2) Every description of the revised scholarship program clearly stated that it was subject to change, suspension and termination by Liberty University and the LCA Tuition Contract that  parents were annually required to sign from 2012 forward clearly states that they understand the LU-LCA scholarship is for tuition only and that the terms or conditions are determined by Liberty University and may change at any time – plainly communicating to parents that they should not make long term decisions that depend on the continuation of this generous award.

(3) In order to further assist students who received the 10% per year scholarship award, Liberty University also announced that students who enrolled at LCA after January 24, 2012 through the 2015-16 school year and remained at LCA through graduation would also be eligible to participate in Liberty’s very generous financial aid program that grew to $109 million for all resident students this year.  This program will provide approximately 38% in additional tuition discounts on average to this same group of students based on current award levels.  Students who do not continue at LCA to graduation and are now receiving the 10% per year scholarship award credit will receive the percentages earned through the end of this school year when they attend Liberty but, under the longstanding LU-LCA scholarship program terms, they will not also be eligible for the additional Liberty financial aid (students must choose between the LU-LCA scholarship and the other aid Liberty offers all students).

(4) No one is losing any scholarship award credits they have earned to date or through the end of the 2015-16 academic year.

Liberty University is pleased that it was able to offer this generous scholarship program to students of local Christian schools over the last two decades and will continue to provide more and more assistance to all its students as part of its Christian mission of making higher education affordable and accessible to all.

Sincerely,

The Liberty Offices of Admissions and Financial Aid

LU-LCA Scholarship Program at Liberty University

Updated Policy – Effective 9/1/15

After reviewing the local high school affiliate scholarship programs, Liberty University has made the following changes to the programs effective September 1, 2015:

1) No LU-LCA scholarships will be awarded to students who enroll or reenroll after breaking enrollment at LCA after September 1, 2015, by virtue of attending and graduating from LCA.  Such students will be eligible for Liberty University funded institutional aid and scholarships, and federal and state financial aid, on the same basis as other Liberty University applicants and students.

2) Liberty University will award scholarships under the 25%/50%/75%/100% scholarship plan to all LCA students who were enrolled at LCA prior to January 24, 2012, and who graduate from LCA in May 2017 and thereafter.  This award is based on the number of grade years a student completes in high school at LCA before graduation from LCA.  It is a 25% scholarship for remaining tuition costs (after subtracting other non-loan financial aid) per grade of high school the student completes at LCA (four years = 100%; three years = 75%; two years = 50%; one year = 25%).  The scholarship percentage is applied to tuition costs after subtracting the Federal Pell Grant, Federal SEOG, and the VTAG awards from the tuition total.

3) For those students who enrolled in LCA from January 24, 2012, to September 1, 2015, Liberty University will award scholarships under the 10%-per-year scholarships plan for each year of enrollment completed between January 24, 2012, and May 2016, (up to a maximum of 50%), with two additional options, one  stackable and one non-stackable.  This award is based on the number of grade years a student completes at LCA before graduation from LCA.  For every grade year a student completes by May of 2016 at LCA, from kindergarten through 12th grade, the student earns a scholarship award of 10%, not to exceed 50%.  With the stackable option, this award is 10% of the tuition total.  With the non-stackable option, this award is 10% of remaining tuition costs (after subtracting other non-loan financial aid).  The options are awardable as follows:

  • Stackable.  If the student stays continuously enrolled in LCA from September 1, 2015, until graduation from LCA, the scholarship will be stackable on top of other Liberty University funded institutional aid and scholarships, as well as federal and state grants, for which they qualify (up to 100% of tuition).
  • Non-stackable.  If the student breaks enrollment at LCA, the student is awarded the scholarship with the existing plan’s condition that the LCA scholarship is not stackable with other Liberty University funded institutional aid or scholarships, or federal and state grants, for which they qualify.

Only one 10% benefit will be awarded for a grade year that is repeated at LCA.

4) All other terms and conditions for the award and maintenance of the scholarship under the scholarship plans as  they existed on August 31, 2015* remain in effect, including the term that Liberty University reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of the scholarship at any time in its discretion, as well as to suspend or terminate the scholarship.

* All LCA scholarship recipients must also meet the following terms and conditions:

  • Meet Liberty University admission requirements.
  • Have attended Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, VA, graduate from LCA (except for students utilizing only the non-stackable 10%-per-year scholarship), and directly enroll into a Liberty undergraduate residential degree program the fall semester following high school graduation.

  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 each semester while attending Liberty University.  If the student’s cumulative GPA falls below the minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50, the student has one probationary grace semester of enrollment using the scholarship to reestablish a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher.  If the student is unsuccessful in restoring his or her cumulative GPA to 2.50 or higher with the probationary grace semester, the student forfeits and is not eligible for the scholarship until the semester after the cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher has been achieved.  Under no circumstances will forfeiture of any semester of eligibility extend the time period of eligibility beyond the original eight fall and spring semesters for which the scholarship can be used.
  • The scholarship is for prospective Liberty University students only.  Current Liberty University students who did not receive this scholarship upon matriculation to Liberty University are not eligible.
