Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant

The VTAG is designed to provide financial assistance to Virginia-domiciled residents. Learn more about this grant below and check out Level Up Virginia’s Financial Aid webpage for more information about aid offered to Virginia residents.

2023-2024 Grant Amount:

  • Residential Undergraduate: $5,000
  • Residential Graduate: $5,000
  • Online Undergraduate: $2,500
  • Online Graduate: $2,500
  • Grandfathered Undergraduate: up to $3,400
  • Grandfathered Graduate: up to $1,700

Categories and Submission Deadlines

  • Category 1: Returning students who received VTAG funding in the previous year. This also includes transfer students who received VTAG funding in the previous year at their former institution.
  • Category 2: New and returning students who did not receive VTAG funding their previous year of enrollment. To be considered for category 2, students must submit their VTAG application by July 31.
  • Category 3: Students are not guaranteed funding in this category if approved. This category includes students who submit a VTAG application between  August 1 and September 14.
  • Category 4: Students are not guaranteed funding in this category if approved. This category includes students who submit a VTAG application by December 1.

General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be a Virginia domiciled resident
  • Must not have moved to Virginia for the purpose of attending post-secondary school
  • Awarded to qualifying eligible degree programs/majors only (see below)
  • Students enrolled only in a certificate-level program are not eligible for VTAG
  • Requires full-time enrollment (unless approved to receive the funds at less-than-full-time during the LAST semester of a degree program)
  • Students who received VTAG in the previous aid year do not need to submit a new application. Only students who have not received VTAG or who have broken enrollment should re-apply.
  • Other criteria apply, subject to change

TAG Teacher Bonus

Undergraduate students pursuing a career in teaching are eligible for an additional $500 VTAG bonus award during their senior year.

Standard Residential student 2023-2024 VTAG award combined with the $500 TAG Teacher Bonus award:

  • $2,750 per eligible term
  • $5,500 annually

Standard Online student 2023-2024 VTAG award combined with the $500 TAG Teacher Bonus award:

  • $1,500 per eligible term
  • $3,000 annually

Eligibility requirements:

  • Must be fully accepted in an undergraduate degree program
  • Must be recognized at the senior level classification for the term in which the TAG Teacher Bonus award is applied, regardless of whether or not it is the student’s graduation year. If a student’s senior year extends beyond two semesters, the student may continue to receive the TAG Teacher Bonus award provided the student meets all other VTAG eligibility requirements.
  • Must be officially enrolled in a Virginia Department of Education approved educator preparation program. Eligible programs are listed below. Students in an eligible program and meeting all other eligibility requirements will have their accounts updated automatically by the Financial Aid Office with the additional grant award.
  • Must have a standard VTAG award disbursed in the semester in which the TAG Teacher Bonus award is disbursed.  Students are ineligible for the TAG Teacher Bonus award if they are already at their VTAG lifetime limit.

Some theology and religion programs are NOT eligible for VTAG funds from the State of Virginia (known as CIP Code 39 programs: Theology and Religious Vocations). Eligibility based on degree programs is subject to change.

VTAG regulations require all graduate students to be enrolled in at least nine credit hours per term at the graduate level.

Virginia Two Year College Transfer Grant

Amount per year:

  • Up to $1,000 for standard grant amount
  • Up to an additional $1,000 for certain majors

Eligibility:

  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Undergraduate in-state student (first time entering freshman no earlier than fall 2007)
  • Must be a Virginia-domiciled resident
  • Must not have moved to Virginia for purposes of attending post-secondary school
  • Need-based: Returning students must have an EFC of $8,000 or less. Students who became eligible for the first time in Fall 2012 are granted the maximum EFC of $9,000. Students who became eligible for the first time in Fall 2013 are granted the maximum EFC of $12,000.
  • Must meet Selective Service requirements
  • Must have earned an Associate’s degree at a Virginia two-year public institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 for the Associate’s degree
  • Must maintain the 3.0 cumulative GPA at Liberty University
  • Must be enrolled full time at Liberty University by the fall or spring semester following the completion of the Associate’s degree
  • Degree program cannot be for religious training or theological education
  • Additional $1,000 requires major in science, teaching, mathematics, engineering or nursing
  • Limited to three years or 70 credit hours
  • Other criteria apply, subject to change
  • If eligible, an application will be available in the student’s ASIST account in the Financial Aid Forms section. If a student believes he or she is eligible for the Virginia Two Year College Transfer Grant but the application is not available to complete in ASIST, please contact the Liberty University Financial Aid Office by email at financialaid@liberty.edu.
  • Virginia Two Year College Transfer Grant award projections will always be estimated awards until a final State budget is passed and a final roster of students is collected.  Please keep in mind that this grant is subject to change based on State budgetary needs.

Tobacco Region Loan Forgiveness and Scholarship Programs

These programs were established by the Tobacco Commission to provide educational assistance with the goal of strengthening the Southwest and Southside economies in Virginia. As of the 2019-2020 academic year, both programs were not renewed. All students who received funding from the Tobacco Region Loan Forgiveness or Scholarship Programs during the 2018-2019 year will no longer be eligible for those funds.

Talent Attraction Program

The Commission has created the new Talent Attraction Program (TAP) that students in specific career fields can apply for assistance in repayment of his/her student loans after graduation. Recipients will be chosen through a competitive review process.  Information can be found at https://www.revitalizeva.org/grant-loan-program/student-loan-repayment/. In addition, a loan repayment program for healthcare occupations (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dental professionals, registered nurses, pharmacists) will be offered. Information will be made available at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/health-equity/virginia-loan-repayment-programs-2/ regarding this program.
