Placement Auditions
All incoming School of Music students must complete a vocal or instrumental placement audition for the School of Music. Placement Auditions may be completed in-person or via video submission.
- Placement Auditions are designed for our faculty to get to know you and your musicianship. Based upon your audition, our faculty will place you in the appropriate studio for your applied lessons.
- Incoming Students should complete their Placement Audition on their primary instrument.
- While any incoming student may declare a specific music major upon acceptance to Liberty University, the Placement Audition does not by itself secure entrance into a music degree program. This decision is made at the end of the sophomore year, upon successful completion of the Sophomore Review – a required evaluation for each declared School of Music major in order to proceed in his or her chosen program of study.
Scholarship Consideration
Please read below for information on School of Music Scholarships based on the Placement Audition:
- Once students have completed their placement audition, they can apply for the New Student Scholarship found on the Scholarship page.
- The deadline for applications is February 28, 2026, for students beginning in the Fall 2026 semester.
- For you to be eligible for this scholarship, you must have completed your placement audition either in-person or through video submission and completed the New Student Scholarship 2026-2027 Application.
- Students can still complete their placement audition after February 28th, 2026, but they will not be eligible for scholarship consideration.
General Guidelines for Audition Repertoire
The guidelines for each primary instrument, based on the area of study, are provided in the PDFs below. Please click on the appropriate PDF, locate your intended major, and find the corresponding primary instrument to view the audition requirements.
In-Person Placement Auditions

Video Placement Auditions
School of Music Video Placement Audition
For incoming students who are not able to complete a live audition for placement into your applied lessons, you will need to submit a video audition. Incoming Students must submit video recordings based on the School of Music Placement Audition Guidelines (PDF). Please submit this form above to submit your audition for your intended primary instrument.
How to Complete Your Placement Video
- Record your Performance
- Film yourself performing on your primary instrument. This can be done in a church, on a stage, or in a well-lit room. Ensure the audio quality is clear, so your vocal or instrumental sound comes through accurately. You may use a smartphone or video recording equipment.
- Edit Your Submission
- We recommend combining all clips into a single video for easy submission. There are many free apps and software options available to help you edit and merge your videos.
- Upload and Share
- Upload your final video to YouTube as an unlisted link. This ensures only people with the link can view it, and it will not appear publicly on your channel or search results. If you’re using another platform (e.g., Vimeo, Google Drive, Dropbox), make sure the sharing settings are set to “Anyone with the link can view” (not restricted or private).
After completing the placement video, please submit the School of Music Video Placement Audition form.
Students only need to audition for the primary instrument at this time. If you would like to submit an audition for your secondary instrument for possible placement into private lessons, please email som@liberty.edu.
