A Word from the President

Photo of President Jerry Falwell

With a new academic year underway, I’m excited to see the growth taking place on Liberty Mountain and in our community as a whole. So many great things are happening, and it is a blessing to share it all with you.

Many of our academic programs are expanding, and the new building for the School of Business officially opened its doors to incoming students. Seeing students fill the classrooms and communal areas have made this long-awaited building worth the wait. We also launched the Michael W. Smith Center for Commercial Music, which includes a record label that will allow students to learn directly from successful artists and build much-needed connections for their own careers.

Our Athletics program is soaring to new heights as well, with our football team hosting Syracuse, the first nationally-ranked team to play in Williams Stadium. One of the largest crowds in Flames Football history came out to show support for Coach Hugh Freeze and the team, with all of Flames Nation cheering the team on in the historic matchup.

As we celebrate where we are today and look toward our future, we are also mindful of our history. For this reason, we’ve been investing in our local community through restoration projects, like Mead’s Tavern, and partnerships with other groups seeking to memorialize our history, like the nonprofit Friends of New London, which recently unveiled a monument commemorating New London’s contributions to our nation. We live in an area rich with American history, and we want to ensure that these stories and events live on for generations.

In this same spirit of honoring our history, I attended “The Final Salute” ceremony at the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, Va., where I joined Vice President Mike Pence and many other guests to pay tribute to our veterans. It was a privilege to be there among so many who had fought for our country and our freedom.

Although last year was truly Liberty’s best year ever, God is already exceeding our expectations and taking us to new heights in the 2019-20 academic year. Thank you for being a part of what God is doing at Liberty University.

Jerry Falwell
President

Liberty Freezes Tuition

Liberty University doesn’t believe education should come with a high price, which is why we are making tuition as affordable as possible by freezing our residential tuition rate for the second year in a row and online tuition for its fourth.

We’re already more affordable than many private colleges and universities where debt and tuition increases are common, but there’s more to be done.

With the tuition freeze in effect and investments in scholarship programs increasing, Liberty is working toward making a world-class education attainable for all students.

Giving Day Is Coming

Get ready to ignite the flame!

Giving Day is Wednesday, Nov. 13, and we are warming up for an incredible day of supporting our students, fellow faculty and staff, and school.

Our goal is to unite our Liberty family across the globe and raise funding for various areas of the university, such as scholarships for our students and military heroes, benevolence funds for faculty and staff, and annual funds for any immediate needs. No gift is ever too small.

Stay tuned for more information, and visit Liberty.edu/Giving to spark ideas on where you can make a difference on Giving Day.

Campus Security

The safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our highest priority, and the Liberty University Police Department (LUPD) rises to the challenge of protecting our campus every day. With the start of a new academic year, LUPD has initiated a threefold plan:

1. Intelligence-based situational awareness

2. Christlike community policing

3. Intentional security rounds and presence

Watch our latest campus security video to see how we endeavor to ensure the safety of all who set foot on Liberty’s campus.

State Games of America

Liberty University recently hosted the State Games of America, an Olympic-style event where athletes from across the nation compete in a variety of sports. Held July 31-Aug. 4, the State Games and Liberty University welcomed thousands of participants and guests to campus for a fun-filled week.

On Friday, everyone gathered for the Opening Ceremonies in the Vines Center, where a giant American flag was unfurled during the National Anthem and the Olympic cauldron was lit by Lady Flames Softball Head Coach Dot Richardson.

Competitions were spread throughout the week and utilized many of Liberty’s state-of-the-art facilities, such as the LaHaye Ice Center, Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, and Liberty Natatorium. Athletes competed in more than 30 sports, ranging from archery and track & field to skating and ninja challenges.

The State Games was a great success, and Liberty is proud to have hosted the 2019 competitions.

Construction Update

The School of Business opened its doors at the start of the semester for students, faculty, and staff. The new 78,000-square-foot facility brings additional classrooms, offices, a 500-seat auditorium, and more parking spaces to campus.

Plans for a parking garage on Liberty Mountain are moving forward. Two residence halls have been torn down to make way for the multilevel parking deck, and about 6,000 yards of concrete will be poured in the coming weeks.

Ongoing projects made progress over the summer, including the Liberty Arena, which is on schedule for its expected completion date of Fall 2020. Steel construction will start taking shape in October. The interior of the Liberty Football Center — formerly known as the Williams Football Operations Center — is nearly finished, and its exterior should be completed by the end of February. The renovation will add 20,000 square feet in additional space for offices, recruiting rooms, locker rooms, and a nutrition station.

Fall Sports Outlook

The Flames’ quest for their first bowl game kicked off Aug. 31 against Syracuse, the first Power 5 and nationally ranked FBS opponent to visit Williams Stadium. The Flames fought hard but eventually fell to Syracuse with a final score of 24-0. This month, the Flames had three home games in a row — beating Buffalo, in-state foe Hampton, and New Mexico.

Men’s DI hockey is back in action and looking to qualify for nationals for the fourth consecutive season. The season started Sept. 20 in a dominant 11-1 home win over Duquesne. Other opponents visiting the LaHaye Ice Center include Syracuse, Ohio, and Alabama.

Flames Field Hockey started the season with high expectations this fall after ending last season ranked No. 16 in the nation. The Lady Flames won at home against JMU, Richmond, Lafayette, Yale, and Villanova.

Last season, the men’s soccer team was one of the most exciting teams to watch, ranking 10th nationally in goals per game. The men’s and women’s soccer teams’ home openers were both held on Sept. 1, and they each had two more home games this month.
