Ever since middle school, Chapman has been interested in religious freedom and political process, but five years ago, something happened to her that changed her dreams. This young girl from Russell County, Ky. stirred national attention when she stood up against the American Civil Liberty’s Union (ACLU) to uphold her constitutional rights. During her senior year of high school, Chapman was elected to be chaplain of her class.

Runners and walkers from all over the community joined together for the third annual Liberty Mountain 5k Trail Race. The 3.1-mile race was held on the Liberty Mountain trail system Saturday morning. The competition started and ended at the Snowflex facility, with various awards given to many of the participants. Student Activities hosted the race and awarded the top three female and male runners in each age group with a medal.

There is one week left until Valentine’s Day, which means the scramble for gifts and restaurant reservations has already begun for some people, while plenty of college students wait and pray for that lucky and affordable flash of inspiration for the perfect date.

Local multimedia art group Mediumless will hold its first showcase of the new year on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Howery Mezzanine Roanoke Main Library. The opening gala, in collaboration with Roanoke group Emerging Artists, will be presenting “Lynchburg in Roanoke” which will showcase and promote the artwork of three members from Mediumless.

The Wedding Planner Society (WPS) offered opportunities for everyone at their first new member interest meeting of the semester on Thursday, Jan. 27. The meeting was held to inform future members of how to join WPS and what kinds of activities they can expect to do as members. WPS was founded by President Kelley Rucker in the spring of 2010.

Teams of four entered the gym, poised for action. Faces painted, shoes tied and tee-shirts matching, groups of students filled the Shilling Center, anticipating the day’s festivities. The second annual Hill City Scavenger Hunt was about to begin Saturday, Jan. 29, and students chatted excitedly as they awaited their turn at the registration table.

Tyler Ellwein, known as TJ to friends and family, is a freshman athletic training major at Liberty. He likes baseball, basketball, working out at the LaHaye Student Center and going on adventures with his friends. Tyler Ellwein is also an Eagle Scout and was recently one of four Eagle Scouts across the U.S. nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor American Spirit Award.
