Study Guides

Elementary (M.A.T.)

  • Licensure Tests (passing scores PRIOR to applying for Gate 3*)

    Praxis II prior to 7/1/2014:

  • Praxis II 0014 Elementary Content Knowledge = 143 
    OR
    Praxis II 5014 Elementary Content Knowledge (electronic) = 143

        Praxis II effective 7/1/2014

  • Praxis II 5031 Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects

    • Reading and Language Arts Subtest (5032) = 165
    • Mathematics Subtest (5033) = 164
    • Social Studies Subtest (5034) = 155
    • Science Subtest (5035) = 159

      *To pass the Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects test you must receive a passing score on each subtest. You must take the full test on your initial attempt. If after your first attempt you did not pass one of the individual subtests, you may take just that subtest again for a reduced fee.
  • VCLA (Writing = 235; Reading = 235 or Composite = 470)
  • VRA001 = 235 (prior to 7/2011)
    OR
    RVE (Elem/Sped) = 157 (7/2011 and after)
    EDUC 554 required BEFORE taking the RVE.  RVE now available out-of-state (Instructions).
    *Note: Passing RVE scores at Gate 3 are preferred.  However, students are allowed to submit a registration receipt for the RVE with test date up to two months after the Gate 3 Application initial submission deadline for probationary status.  Register at http://www.ets.org.

Middle Grades (M.A.T.)

Secondary (M.A.T.)

Special Education (M.A.T.)

  • Licensure Tests (passing scores PRIOR to applying for Gate 3*)
    • VCLA (Writing = 235; Reading = 235 or Composite = 470)
    • Praxis II 5543: Special Education: Core Knowledge and Mild to Moderate Applications
      (required in 15 states and for Liberty's program approval by CEC, although not required by VDOE)
    • VRA001 = 235 (prior to 7/2011)
      OR
      RVE (Elem/Sped) = 157 (7/2011 and after)

Administration/Supervision (M.Ed./Ed.S./Ed.D.)

    • VIRGINIA CANDIDATES for preK-12 principal or assistant principal must pass the SLLA with a minimum score of 163. The only Virginia candidates exempt from the SLLA are those seeking a license strictly for district office service.
    • OUT-OF-STATE-CANDIDATES are to pass their own state’s designated licensure exam. If their state does not have a licensure exam, they must meet the Virginia passing scores on the SLLA.

*Note: Passing SLLA scores at Gate 3 are preferred.  However, students are allowed to submit a registration receipt for the SLLA with test date up to two months after the Gate 3 Application initial submission deadline for probationary status.  Register at http://www.ets.org.

School Counseling (M.Ed./Ed.S./Ed.D.)

  • Licensure Tests (passing scores PRIOR to applying for Gate 3*)
    • Praxis II: Professional School Counselor (0421 or 5421) will be required at Gate 3 effective for February 1, 2014 deadline and after (applying for Summer 2014 internship and after). You may also submit passing scores for your state’s equivalent test in place of the Praxis II 0421 or 5421. If your state does not have an equivalent then you must complete the Praxis II 0421 or 5421. Currently, there is no minimum score for Virginia, but you should be mindful of minimum scores for other states in which you may be seeking licensure.

*Note: Praxis II: Professional School Counselor scores at Gate 3 are preferred. However, students are allowed to submit a registration receipt for the Praxis II with test date up to two months after the Gate 3 Application initial submission deadline for probationary status. Program Specialist (M.Ed./Ed.S./Ed.D.)

  • Licensure Tests (passing scores PRIOR to applying for Gate 3*)
    • Math Specialist:
      • Praxis II 0069 Middle School Mathematics = 163
        or
      • Praxis II 0061 Math: Content Knowledge = 147

Reading Specialist

  • Virginia licensure ONLY
  • VRA002 = 245 (prior to 7/2011)
    OR
    Praxis II RVE (Reading Specialists) 5304 or 0304 = 162 (7/2011 and after)
    EDUC 554 required BEFORE taking the RVE. RVE now available out-of-state (Instructions).

  • No test required for Early Childhood or Gifted Specialist (add-ons)

NOTE: Additional Endorsements (new option in VDOE Regulations, effective 9-21-2007)

An individual who holds a teaching license may add an additional endorsement to the license by passing a rigorous academic subject test prescribed by the Board of Education. This testing option does not apply to individuals who are seeking an early/primary preK-3 or elementary education preK-6 endorsement or who hold a technical professional license, vocational evaluator license, pupil personnel services license, school manager license or division superintendent license.
