Wireless Communications Research

Wireless Communication System Analysis and Design

What’s Involved in this Research?

The aim of this research is to investigate ways of enabling a wireless communication system to adapt itself more autonomously to its operating radio environment.

Simply put, the overarching objective is to make a wireless communication system smarter.

Cognitive radio is an intelligent radio (or highly flexible and adaptable radio), which can sense the surrounding environment, make decisions to achieve its objectives, and adapt itself according to its decision.

One of the major motivations and applications of cognitive radio research is to share and utilize the wireless communications medium more efficiently. The electromagnetic spectrum is a precious resource, yet, under-utilized depending on time and location. In addition, the wireless radio environment is highly dynamic and because of this, wireless communication systems need to be highly adaptable to their operating environments.

As communication technology advances, integrating heterogeneous systems and providing ubiquitous, seamless communications have become the overarching objectives for research and development. One of the new emerging research thrusts is using mobile, flying object such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to provide more reliable and cost-effective wireless communications.

UAVs can be used in various applications, to name a few, such as doing a cargo delivery, aerial surveillance, aerial imaging, and video streaming. UAVs can also be used as an aerial communication platform to provide communication links to ground users. In order to provide more reliable services using UAVs, one of the promising ways to do is to integrate UAVs into cellular networks.

The aim of this research is to design and optimize a UAV-integrated communication system to meet each envisioned application need.

How Students Benefit

The future is expected to be a highly connected society (both humans and machines) and communication systems are a key enabler.

Hence, students who participate and acquire knowledge through research projects on communication systems can play an important role as engineers in designing a communication system that connects people and machines after they graduate.

Undergraduate students can participate in this research by doing literature survey and running simulations and experiments.

Graduate students can contribute to this research by providing new insights on system dynamics, developing new algorithms, or performing system optimization.

Impact on Society

Many concepts and techniques developed under Cognitive Radio framework have influenced the development of 5G cellular network and newer IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standard, and will be highly likely to influence more future wireless communication systems such as future WiFi and 5G and beyond. The Ubiquitious 3-D Wireless Communications research will also lay a foundation for designing future wireless networks and make a smart city more feasible.
