Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence in Engineering Curriculum

What’s Involved in this Research?

The goal of this project is to foster Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and cybersecurity into current engineering curriculum. However, integrating AI, IoT and cybersecurity into education curriculum is challenging because it covers many learning dimensions, such as embedded devices, AI platforms, data security, and edge computing.

To achieve the goal, we design a microservice based secure Artificial Intelligence over Internet of Things (AIoT) training platform. Each service contains REST APIs to perform certain tasks.

The benefit of this design is that developing each service involves specific domain knowledge. Therefore, it is easier for each discipline team to develop and deploy a service independently. For example, an Engineering team could develop an embedded application service, while another Computer Science team develops Deep Learning service. In this project, interdisciplinary teams from LU and Illinois State University will work on developing microservices based on their academic strength.

How Students Benefit

The training platform allows instructors to design interesting and structured hands-on activities in which students can learn how to make Machine Learning/Deep Learning work in IoT, and how attackers exploit different vulnerabilities in an IoT system.

Students not only can increase their basic AI and IoT-related knowledge, but also can raise their interest in engineering education.

Students can be involved in this project by designing web pages, training Deep Learning models, writing embedded system programs, and performing various cybersecurity attack scenarios.

Students can also evaluate the effectiveness of the learning material.

Impact on Society

Teaching AIoT and its security is no simple task because its scale and scope could be overwhelming. There are limited curriculum or hands-on laboratory resources for AIoT education. We believe that this platform can foster AIoT education.
