Professor Cihak enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1981 and served as a Pararescueman for eight years. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Education, he was commissioned through the Officer Training School in 1990. He continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force for over 33 years as a B-52G, B-52H, B-1B, B-2A pilot, aircraft commander, mission commander, and instructor pilot. 

Professor Cihak also served in a variety of operational, staff, and command roles including:

  • Service in the NATO Air Operations Center in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina
  • Chief of Strategy and Chief of Combat Operations in the U.S. Air Forces Southern Combined Air and Space Operations Center
  • Director of Combat Plans in the U.S. Air Force Central Command
  • Chief of Strategy Pacific Air Forces
  • Vice Commander, Pacific Air Operations Center
