Biography

Joseph Henson brings a wealth of experience to the classroom, blending a deep background in performance with a passion for teaching. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of North Texas, he spent 21 years as a saxophonist in the United States Army Blues Jazz Ensemble, based in Washington, D.C. During that time, he had the opportunity to perform with many iconic jazz artists, including Chris Potter, James Moody, and Joe Morello. He also served as the band’s Musical Director for several years before coming to Liberty University.

Mr. Henson has been sharing his expertise with students for years, regularly leading masterclasses and serving as a faculty member at the National Jazz Workshop since 2010. When he’s not teaching, he performs with his own quartet in the D.C. area and has released four albums, including Transformation and A Thousand Words. He also enjoys studying and discussing matters of theology and is the author of Teach Your Kids About Jesus, a resource for homeschool families
