Biography

Dr. Michelle Swanson has dedicated over four decades to music education. Most recently, she retired from in-person teaching at the University of Northern Iowa, where she made a lasting impact as an educator and mentor. During her tenure, Dr. Swanson taught multiple music education methods courses, piano for the choral classroom, introductory music education courses, and music appreciation. She also served as an academic advisor and supervised both field experiences and student teachers, shaping the next generation of music educators with her expertise and passion.

She continues to enjoy serving as an adjudicator and clinician throughout the Midwest. In addition, she supports first- and second-year music educators across Iowa by coordinating mentorships that pair novice teachers with experienced mentors, fostering strong professional relationships. Outside of music education, Dr. Swanson currently serves as the Board President and Capital Campaign Chairperson for the Northeast Iowa Foodbank.

Dr. Swanson is married to Chad, an attorney, and they have two adult children. Their daughter, Liz, is a data analyst in Ohio and is married to Rick, who is in his second year of medical residency. Their son, Matthew, is currently serving in Bangkok, Thailand, doing mission work for a church plant affiliated with the SALT Co. Network of churches. Chad and Michelle enjoy spending time in Arizona, spending time with friends, and traveling to National Parks. They cherish visits from their children and love taking walks with their adorable dog, Larry.
