Biography
David K. Schmal has been active as a composer, arranger, and educational scholar for a number of years. As a teacher, Dr. Schmal has been on the faculty of Lesley University – Boston, Colorado Christian University – Denver, and the University of Colorado. He has also served as a guest lecturer in Music-infused instruction and Integrated Arts at institutions of higher learning across the country. Corey credits include work with the British broadcasting company (BBC), Canadian broadcasting company (CBC), Japanese television, and various broadcast, radio, television, and film production companies across the United States,
Dr. Schmal also serves as the Coordinator for Film Music Studies at the Michaels W. Smith Center for Commercial Music and the Developer/Instructor for the BM in Commercial Music and the MA in Music Education.
As a composer and arranger, Dr. Schmal has produced two albums for Gospel Artist Sharon Williamson-Watt, composed music for three motion picture features, served as a staff composer for World Vision, as well as writing music for a variety of different broadcast television and cable productions including PBS, CBC, and BBC. In 2001, he received the BMI/Jerry Goldsmith National Film Music Award which included a scholarship to study film music composition and orchestration at UCLA. In 2006, he received a Telly Award for Best Feature Film Score. He also was asked to be a Composer in Residence for the Center for Cultural Exchange – Auvillar, France and was a featured artist in d’été Fete du Jazz d’Auvillar – Agen/Toulouse France. His credits also include involvement in 29 film production projects where he served as composer and music supervisor.
Dr. Schmal lives in Forest Virginia with his wife and three children.
