School of Nursing career coach, Lavonne Abe, assists nursing students in achieving their goals and helps nursing students build a professional network. Lavonne is a dedicated career coach who desires to see every student she helps to succeed in whatever career path they may choose, whether they’re a freshman or a doctoral student.

What is Lavonne’s background in nursing/ career coaching?

Lavonne started being a career coach for Liberty University 2 years ago and has continued a natural progression in this field. Before she was a career coach at Liberty, she worked in Human Resources at Banner Health System, where one of her many roles was to open a career transition center to help employees.

“We had closed a surgical center, and then we were bringing those employees into new jobs, and if they couldn’t get a job within our organization, we were helping them get jobs outside of our organization.”

Lavonne has been assisting people in their career goals in many different ways for years until one day she came across a career coaching opportunity on Liberty University’s website.

“God’s been preparing me for this for a long time, and this is a great match for my knowledge, my skills, and the work that I really love to do.” – Lavonne Abe

What is the rewarding side of being a career coach?

For Lavonne, the most rewarding aspect of being a career coach is helping students write their cover letters to make students stand out to employers.

“I love writing Cover letters! I love that, and the reason why is we can ask a series of questions, and we can really kind of weave in what your calling is.” – Lavonne Abe

She also helps students customize their cover letters and other documents for specialty areas that they may want to pursue. Lavonne has seen many students succeed in receiving these kinds of jobs because of how she helps them highlight how they are equipped for it.

What can students learn from her career coaching sessions?

With Lavonne, students can learn to build professional relationships to support them as they pursue their nursing degrees. In addition, students can learn how to tell their story through cover letters, how to prepare for an interview, and learn more about holistic nursing.

“Holistic nursing care is not just meeting their physical needs but their emotional needs” – Lavonne Abe

Lavonne loves seeing the students she helps succeed in their career goals and believes that a student’s career starts as a freshman.

“Your career starts as a freshman and probably even before that, but you know really develop a career plan day one” – Lavonne Abe
