Keeping You Safe at Liberty University
The Liberty University Police Department (LUPD) serves and protects our campus community as a full-service law enforcement agency staffed by professional, highly trained personnel as a part of Liberty University’s Office of Security & Public Safety.
LUPD staff consists of police officers, armed security officers, and civilian staff members. All personnel are trained in Basic First Aid, CPR, and AED services.
Liberty University Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA) and works to protect you and the entire university community. At times, LUPD will work with the Lynchburg Police Department, other law enforcement agencies, and first responders to ensure your safety.

Gerald Irwin, Liberty University Chief of Police

Police Chief of the Liberty University Police Department, Gerald Irwin, joined LUPD in 2023 and was appointed chief in 2025.
Throughout his career, Chief Irwin has held a variety of roles, including Patrol Officer, SWAT member, Detective, and Commander of specialized units such as VICE, Intelligence, and Narcotics.
Chief Irwin holds a B.A. in Criminology from the University of South Florida and an M.S. in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy (Session #283) and the Senior Management Institute for Police (Session #80). He serves on the Virginia FBI National Academy Associates Executive Board and the Liberty University Command College Advisory Board.
