Mathew D. Staver was named Dean of Liberty University School of Law on October 13, 2006. Dean Staver, who founded the nationally recognized religious liberty litigation and education public interest organization known as Liberty Counsel, has served as Interim Dean for the law school since May 2006.

Dean Staver commented on his appointment: “For me the vision of the law school was born years ago when I began defending religious freedom in courtrooms across America. I quickly realized that the law is good when it is used properly. I am very excited to take the helm of this law school as we equip a new generation of lawyers, judges, policymakers and world leaders to use the law as a fulcrum for good.”

"There is not a better or more qualified person in the country to lead the law school than Mat Staver,” said Dr. Jerry Falwell, Chancellor of Liberty University.

Dean Staver’s appointment closes a national search to replace the law school’s founding dean, Bruce W. Green. "I reviewed all the applications, and by far Mat Staver was the superior candidate,” Falwell said. “He has written several hundred articles on religious liberty, authored more than 10 books, has more than 120 published, precedent-setting legal opinions, has argued before the United States Supreme Court and has built the nation’s premier religious liberty legal organization. I have complete confidence in his leadership,” Falwell said.

Dean Staver is a member of the Board of Trustees for Liberty University. He also serves as Director of the Center for Constitutional Litigation and Policy (CCLP), a partnership between Liberty Counsel and Liberty University School of Law. Having been involved in the founding and development of Liberty University School of Law long before its physical inception, Dean Staver has maintained an active and supportive role in the law school from the beginning.

The School of Law opened in August 2004, and the first class will graduate in May 2007. For more information about Liberty University School of Law, please write law@liberty.edu or call 434-592-5300.
