The U.S. Supreme Court renewed Liberty University’s challenge to ObamaCare on Monday, directing the case to be reheard by the federal court of appeals in Richmond, Va.
In a press release from Liberty Counsel, representing Liberty and two private individuals in the case of Liberty University v. Geithner, Mat Staver, attorney for Liberty University and dean of Liberty University School of Law, said the ruling "breathes new life into our challenge to ObamaCare."
"Our fight against ObamaCare is far from over," Staver said. "Congress exceeded its power by forcing every employer to provide federally mandated insurance. But even more shocking is the abortion mandate, which collides with religious freedom and the rights of conscience."
Monday's action is being applauded by organizations across the country, including Concerned Women for America (CWA). CEO and president Penny Nance ('98) issued the following statement:
"As a Liberty University alum, I'm proud to see my alma mater fight for our religious liberties, and I hope this paves the way for similar legal challenges to ObamaCare. The ObamaCare mandate is in direct contradiction to the school's policy on students' agreement to live within the Biblical boundaries of sexuality. Students specifically choose Liberty because it aligns with their core values; the U.S. Government has no right to interfere with that relationship.
"Our tax dollars should not be used to pay for someone else's contraception or abortion-inducing drugs, and no employer should be forced to provide insurance plans which offer services in violation of their religious conscience."
