Faculty, staff, students and invited guests of Liberty University School of Law recently celebrated the 234th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. As part of the celebration, the law school welcomed former Marines and those currently serving our country to commemorate the Marine Corps founding during this week in 1775.
As part of the commemoration, the audience heard from past and present Marines about the history and purpose of the Marine including a statement by John A. Lejeune, Major General Commandant: “On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name ‘Marine.’ In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.”
This year marks the fourth year that the law school honored the military through a celebration. As in years past, a symbolic highlight was the cutting of the cake in which the oldest Marine and youngest Marine present cut the birthday cake with a sword. Additionally, Marine memorabilia was available for attendees to view.
