Amber Henry, a rising third-year Liberty Law student, recently received First Place in Trinity Law School’s national writing competition for her article, “Invisible Children of Latin America.” Her article was inspired by Matthew 28 which focuses on making disciples of all nations and instructing them to obey the Lord’s commandments.
“Ever since I was young, Latin America has always been my focus. Since fifth grade I’ve felt called to go and serve in the Dominican Republic. I’ve travelled to the DR six times, and each time God opens my heart to serve the children of the Dominican Republic,” said Henry.
In 2008, Henry studied abroad in Guatemala where she taught children for six weeks. These children, who were denied their right to education simply because their parents could not afford to get the proper registration papers, represented an estimated one in ten children in Latin America.
“The problems of birth registration are still far from being resolved. Aside from the efforts of UNICEF, little to no research has been done. In my article, I chose to focus on invisible children, because I am passionate about spreading the awareness of the invisible children of Latin America, and hopefully spur others into action, just as I was in 2008,” added Henry.
Article submissions were judged for originality, quality of writing, depth of research and analysis, and the readiness for potential publication. Judges consisted of editors of the Trinity Law Review, as well as, law faculty at Trinity. Henry was awarded a $1,000 monetary prize and publication in Trinity’s upcoming Law Review publication, which will be a special symposium issue on the Center for Human Rights.
“I am proud of Amber’s achievement of winning this national writing contest. It is a high honor. I anticipate great things from Amber as she pursues her passion to help the people in Latin America,” said Mathew Staver, Dean and Professor of Law at Liberty University School of Law.
Henry’s theme for her future comes from Habakkuk 1:5: “Look at the nations and watch – and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.”
