The Daniel L. White Scholarship will be awarded each year, starting in the fall of 2007, to the incoming minority student who best exemplifies the attributes of current third-year law student Daniel White. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage new law students to emulate Mr. White’s contributions to the law school as “Leader, Servant, Diligent Student, and Inspiration to Others,” according to the award.
Robert J. Grey, Jr., past president of the American Bar Association, was present for the announcement of the scholarship at “Opportunity Calling 2007,” a minority law career event held at the law school on March 3. He commended Mr. White for being so honored. Dean Mathew D. Staver made the announcement at the event, which was co-sponsored by the Law School Admission Council as part of National Minority Law School Recruitment Month. Mr. Grey was the keynote speaker.
Mr. White, a member of the law school’s inaugural class, is the first elected president of the law school’s Student Bar Association. He has been active in student government and moot court during his law school career. He served as intern in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Dallas and with in-house counsel of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago the last two summers, respectively. A 2004 graduate of Texas Tech University, he was president or director of numerous campus organizations and was involved in several initiatives that promoted opportunities for minority young people. In addition, he was worship leader for Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship and pianist/organist in two churches during his undergraduate years. Mr. White will graduate with his inaugural classmates in the law school’s first graduation ceremony in May.
The Daniel L. White scholarship will be added to any other scholarships awarded to the individual new student who best embodies Mr. White’s traits as a leader, servant, student, and inspiration to others.
