Liberty University School of Law has advanced two teams to the top 24 in final round of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Law Student Division National Appellate Advocacy Competition. The final national round will be held in Chicago later this semester.
The team of Liberty Law students Christie Jones (Class of 2011), Tim Todd (Class of 2011) and Daniel Yamauchi (Class of 2011) won all five of their arguments and posted wins over Charlotte School of Law, Temple University Beasley School of Law, Florida Coastal School of Law, Barry University School of Law, and Harvard University Law School. The team of Todd Shockley (Class of 2012), Jennifer Gregorin (Class of 2012) and Jason Heinen (Class of 2011) defeated Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University, Florida Coastal School of Law, Cumberland School of Law (Samford), and Ave Maria School of Law.
These two teams continue the exceptional results that Liberty University School of Law has achieved at the ABA tournaments since Liberty began competing. In the five years Liberty has competed in this ABA-sponsored competition, 10 teams have qualified for the regional competition. Of those 10, seven (70%) have reached the regional final and four (40%) have reached the national competition. This marks the third consecutive year that Liberty Law has advanced to the national competition and the first time that Liberty has advanced two teams to the national competition.
In addition to the team awards, Shockley was named the second best oralist in the region and Jones was named the fifth best oralist. This marks the fourth time in five years that Liberty has brought home multiple oralist awards from the ABA Regional Tournament.
“I am very proud of Liberty’s law students and their accomplishments. Their excellence reflects well on the law school and our mission,” said Mathew Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law. “We are appreciate the hard work of Professors Scott Thompson and Rena Lindevaldsen who coached the teams,” concluded Staver.
