Caitlin Pennell and Chelesea Surprenant, both 2013 Juris Doctor candidates, placed second in the American Bar Association (ABA) Regional Negotiation Tournament held this past weekend, Friday and Saturday, November 9-10, at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law in Baltimore, Maryland.
Teams of Madilyn Robinson and Micah Wright, both 2014 Juris Doctor candidates, and James Johnson and Robert Vogel, Class of 2013 candidates, secured fourth and fifth places respectively. Robinson and Wright only missed second place by an average of a half of a point, the narrowest of margins mathematically possible to miss advancing to nationals.
The success of these Liberty teams continues to prove that Liberty is one of the toughest law schools, in terms of negotiations, in the nation.
Overall, 24 teams nationwide advanced to the ABA Nationals with Liberty ranked at the very top. This is the fifth time in six years thatLiberty has advanced to the ABA Nationals. The ABA National Negotiation Tournament will be held in the spring in Dallas, Texas.
Joel Hesch, associate professor of law and AlternativeDispute Resolution (ADR) coach for the three teams, said, “I could not be more proud of our students. I am also grateful for the outstanding coaching assistance from Professor Timothy Todd, and all of the sparring from the Liberty student ADR Board. Liberty students were truly selfless in helping to prepare the teams for competition and it reflects well on our school. I am also proud of how the students gave God the glory for this great victory.”
