Law Student Wins Scholarship Award

Alex K. Monroe, a first-year law student and scholarship winner from Augusta, Georgia, represented Liberty University School of Law at the Fifth Annual Oliver W. Hill-Samuel W. Tucker Scholarship Dinner on November 3 in Richmond, Virginia. This annual event, sponsored by the Richmond Chapter of the Old Dominion Bar Association and the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, was held at the Richmond Crowne Plaza Hotel where scholarship winners from law schools around the Commonwealth of Virginia were named.

First-year, minority law students were invited to write essays on such topics as “How I have benefited from the work of Oliver W. Hill and Samuel W. Taylor.” The scholarship awards are designed to encourage these students in their pursuit of legal careers and also to inspire them to follow in the footsteps of ground-breaking minority legal professionals.

Guest speaker Robert J Grey, Jr., immediate past president of the American Bar Association, and Jonathan K. Stubbs, Professor of Law at the University of Richmond, paid tribute to the two civil rights attorneys after whom the scholarships are named, along with other individuals who were trailblazers in racial equality in America.

Monroe is the son of Alex R. and Tammie Monroe of Hephzibah, Georgia, and a 2005 graduate of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. Although it is early in his law school career, Monroe said that he is currently interested in pursuing a specialty in international human rights. This interest grew in part from his participation in a number of short-term missions trips, including teaching English as a second language in China.
