Liberty University School of Law student Jordan Van Matre (left) won the award for best overall oralist at the 2009 National Constitutional Law Moot Court Competition held recently at Regent University School of Law. With a total of 180.77 points out of a possible 200, Van Matre outscored his nearest competitor by more than five points. He defeated oralists from Elon, Roger Williams School of Law, William and Mary, Villanova, Cincinnati, and BYU.
Two Liberty teams competed at the event, with Van Matre and Amanda Babbitt (center) defeating teams from Villanova, Roger Williams School of Law, William and Mary, and Cincinnati to advance to the semi-finals. The team of Suzanne Caruso and Jennifer Cave advanced to the quarter-final round.
“Both teams were extremely competitive and argued extremely well throughout the tournament. Jordan Van Matre was an outstanding advocate and we are very pleased to add him to the list of top oralists that have come from our relatively young program,” said Scott Thompson (right), Director of the Center for Lawyering Skills and Assistant Professor of Law at Liberty.
Only in its first three years of national competition, Liberty’s Moot Court program has won a total of six oralist awards, including three first-place awards.
