Liberty University School of Law Professor Tory L. Lucas recently served as guest host for Lynchburg’s Morning Show with Mari and Brian. During the show, Lucas and host Brian Weigand discussed presidential politics, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, the defamation case involving the University of Virginia and Rolling Stone magazine, the Cubs winning the World Series, and the upcoming season for Endstation Theatre Company (Professor Lucas serves on its board of directors). Also, Lucas and Weigand interviewed the chairman of the Virginia Republican Party, a representative from the Virginia Democratic Party, and School of Law Academic Dean Timothy M. Todd, who shared recent accomplishments of the School of Law.

Professor Lucas has been no stranger to local radio, dating back to his time teaching at Creighton University School of Law and the University of Nebraska College of Law. Lucas has served as guest host twice and provided commentary many times on Lynchburg’s Morning Show with Mari and Brian covering such topics as climate change, Justice Antonin Scalia’s death and impact on the law, the Supreme Court nomination process, judicial review of NFL’s Deflategate involving Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, unionization of college athletics, antitrust suits against the NCAA, and pay-for-play issues. Lucas also addressed the Bedford Rotary Club and the Lynchburg Rotary Club regarding sports law issues. He was also a guest on the Liberty Flames Sports Network Game On show discussing unionization of college athletics.

Professor Lucas tackled issues such as the Virginia Supreme Court case on Governor Terry McAuliffe’s authority to restore voting rights for felons, the G.O.P. Convention, Justice Scalia’s death and impact on the law, as well as the Supreme Court nomination process while on on The Weekend Show with Pattie Martin. He also appeared on Biz Talk Live to discuss Berkshire Hathaway and the investment career and philosophy of Warren Buffett. Lucas has provided radio commentary on various shows in Omaha, Nebraska, and Fargo, North Dakota, to discuss recent Supreme Court decisions and the Supreme Court nomination process.

In addition to regularly appearing on local radio, Lucas serves on the board of trustees of Culver-Stockton College, which allows him to give speeches to classes and student groups about the law and Liberty University. Finally, Lucas hosts a discussion series called Coffee, Coca-Cola, and Conversations with Professor Tory L. Lucas. Last year, he conducted three of these events, including one at the Liberty University Helms School of Government with Judge Raymond W. Gruender of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Judge Gruender’s name appeared on President-elect Donald Trump’s first short list as a candidate for the Supreme Court.

When asked why he likes to serve local communities, Professor Lucas responded, “It is simple—everything is local! From the law to religion to politics to business to charity to education, it is all delivered in a very real way locally.” Professor Lucas’s wife, Megan A. Lucas, serves as the chief executive officer and chief economic development officer for the Lynchburg Regional Business Alliance. She, too, believes that local service is impactful. “Tory and I believe strongly that we can work together to make our communities better places to live, work, and play. We are so privileged to find service opportunities to make an impact.”
