Former TeenPact Judicial Program attendee, Teresa Scanlan, was crowned Miss America 2011 on Saturday, January 15, 2011. Ms. Scanlan became the youngest woman, at age 17, to be honored with the title since 1921.
Prior to competing in the Miss America pageant, Ms. Scanlan attended the TeenPact Judicial program in the summer of 2009 hosted by Liberty University School of Law. Ms. Scanlan attended the weeklong program where she learned about topics such as Criminal Law, Foundations of Law, Civil Procedure, and Oral Advocacy. In addition to attending classes, Ms. Scanlan also wrote a legal brief and participated in a moot court competition where she argued a case before a panel of judges.
According to Inside Stanly, an editorial blog site of The Stanly News and Press, fellow TeenPact Judicial attendee Olivia Henry commented, “Teresa wasn’t just pretty. She was smart. When everyone got the chance to see her presenting a case in the [Supreme] courtroom and saw how far she progressed in the rounds of competition, people started paying more attention.”
For several years, Liberty University School of Law has hosted the TeenPact Judicial Program, an intense, weeklong program, offering legal instruction to highly motivated and intelligent students interested in the study of law. Attendees are taught and judges by law faculty at Liberty University School of Law and Liberty Counsel litigation attorneys. To strengthen the partnership with TeenPact, the law school offers “The New Generation – TeenPact Scholarship” awarded annually to select students who successfully complete the TeenPact Judicial program, as well as meet the law school’s full admissions standards. TeenPact Judicial will again be held at the law school June 12-17, 2011.
