Mathew D. Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law, joined members of Virginia’s legal community and American Bar Association representatives from around the country for the ABA Conclave on Legal Education last week. The Conclave was held at the University of Virginia School of Law in Charlottesville, Va.
The event, which was held in partnership with the Virginia State Bar Section on the Education of Lawyers in Virginia and the ABA Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, featured Dean Staver as a panelist for an afternoon discussion titled, “Educating Lawyers for the 21st Century”. Joining Dean Staver on the panel were John C. Jeffries, Jr., Dean of University of Virginia School of Law; Carolyn B. Lamm, Esquire, White & Case LLP; and Blake D. Morant, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Washington & Lee University School of Law. The discussion was moderated by Rodney A. Smolla, Dean of T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.
Dean Staver’s presentation outlined the unique Lawyering Skills program at Liberty University School of Law. This six-semester program, offered through the Center for Lawyering Skills, integrates litigation and planning while training aspiring attorneys in legal writing, analysis, and problem solving. Liberty’s Lawyering Skills program generated particular interest from both the practicing bar and the legal academy. For years legal education has been criticized for lacking skills training. Liberty’s Lawyering Skills program is unparalleled. It combines both substantive and skills training.
There to represent the School of Law along with Dean Staver were Jeffrey C. Tuomala, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Professor of Law, and F. Philip Manns, Jr., Professor of Law.
