Liberty University School of Law hosted an Attorney General Candidate Forum this past Tuesday, October 27, featuring Republican candidate for Attorney General, Ken Cuccinelli. The event was held in the Supreme Courtroom in the School of Law. Steve Shannon, the Democratic candidate for Attorney General declined the invitation to appear.
In addition to being an experienced attorney and small business owner, Cuccinelli has served in the Virginia Senate where he serves on the influential Senate Courts of the Justice Committee – a position he has held since 2002. During Cuccinelli’s time in office, he has continuously led the fight to defend all constitutional rights, stop the increases in taxes, protect life and families, and keep Virginia a low-regulated, pro-business state.
Cuccinelli announced his decision to run in April 2008 for the office of Attorney General, and subsequently won the Republican nomination at the May 2008 convention. His opponent, Democratic Party nominee Steve Shannon, of Fairfax County, announced his candidacy for Attorney General in the fall of 2008.
The Office of the Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia serves a four-year term and is the Commonwealth’s chief law firm serving the Virginia state government including all state agencies. In addition to providing legal representation and advice to the Virginia Governor, the Virginia Attorney General provides legal advice to state boards, executive agencies and public higher education institutions; represents the state in suits against the state and criminal appeals; maintains the constitutionality of state laws; and collects all money owed to state institutions.
