The National Institute for Trial Advocacy in partnership with LexisNexis has published Liberty University School of Law Professor Stephen Rice’s book, The Force of Logic: Using Formal Logic as a Tool in the Craft of Legal Argument.
The book describes how ancient rules of philosophical logic are at work in contemporary legal arguments, how modern courts have used tools of formal logic in judicial reasoning, and how contemporary legal practitioners can put the rules of formal logic to work in creating, evaluating, and responding to legal arguments. Lawyers, judges, and law students become accustomed to evaluating legal argument from traditional legal categories, like substantive areas of law or procedural postures of cases. Rice explains how considering the logical structure of a legal argument provides a new perspective for understanding, evaluating, and responding to the legal arguments encountered in learning about and practicing law.
Rice joined the faculty of Liberty University School of Law in 2007 after a career in private practice litigating commercial and other civil disputes at the trial and appellate levels. He teaches Contracts I, Contracts II, Business Associations, Bankruptcy, Mergers and Acquisitions, and has taught throughout the law school’s extensive Lawyering Skills program.
