New students arrived on campus Tuesday for Liberty University School of Law’s new “Set Your SAILS for First-Year Success” orientation program. Fifty-two students are currently attending the first week of the two-week course, out of a total of 87 new students set to join the school this semester. The remainder of students are expected to arrive for the second week.
Enrollment for the incoming class is up 25 percent from last year, an increase that Dean Mathew Staver called “unheard of in today’s declining law school market.”
The retooled orientation, an acronym for “Systematic Approach to Integrated Legal Studies” is now a two-week course, and includes 36 hours of instruction in fields across the legal spectrum, including torts, contracts, civil procedure and property, all taught by Liberty Law faculty, said Rena Lindevaldsen, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
“To give students the edge they need in law school, we have entirely restructured our 1L orientation program,” she said. “We are confident that students will be equipped to better understand what is expected of them and, as a result, excel.”
Classes for the Fall 2014 semester begin Monday, Aug. 18.
