Ashley L. Taylor, Presidential appointee to the United States Commission on Civil Rights and a Partner at the Richmond office of Troutman Sanders, LLP, is the third speaker of the 2005-2006 Speakers’ Forum at Liberty University School of Law. The presentation will start at 3:15 PM on Wednesday, November 30, and will be held in the Student Services Center at the law school. In its second year, the speakers’ series is designed to introduce law students to accomplished leaders who serve in a variety of legal positions. The law school welcomes members of the university and legal community to Speakers’ Forum events.
Ashley Taylor is a member of the law firm’s Executive Committee and focuses his practice in the area of complex commercial litigation and matters involving governmental entities. He has appeared before the Virginia Supreme Court in cases including Medicaid lien disputes, healthcare licensing and/or regulation, and Constitutional issues. Additionally, he has played a primary role in negotiating favorable terms with the Department of Justice in connection with its civil rights investigation of mental health and mental retardation facilities. In December 2004, Taylor was appointed to the United States Commission on Civil Rights by President George W. Bush.
Prior to joining Troutman Sanders, he served as a Deputy Attorney General for Virginia responsible for the Health, Education, and Social Services Division, which consists of more than fifty lawyers. He provided counsel to the Secretary of Health and Human Resources and Secretary of Education. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Virginia Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and as a member of the faculty of the Virginia State Bar Course on Professionalism.
He earned his Juris Doctorate from Washington and Lee School of Law in 1993 and the Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Virginia Military Institute in 1990. Following law school, he served as a law clerk to a United States District Court Judge. He is married to the former A. Gail Hollyfield of Castlewood, Virginia, and has two children, Julian Larence and Collin Burnett.
