The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs of Liberty University School of Law, Rena Lindevaldsen, has been invited to speak on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) at an Albany Law School symposium on Thursday, October 13, 2011. Hosted by Albany Law School and the Albany Government Law Review, the symposium, “LGBT Rights: Toward a More Perfect Union,” will be held in the Dean Alexander Moot Courtroom.
Dean Lindevaldsen will participate in the first panel focusing on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and will include litigators at the forefront of today’s legal news, such as: Maura Healey, Chief of the Civil Rights Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office; and Roberta Kaplan, Partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP. Brian Raum, Director of Marriage Litigation Center for the Alliance Defense Fund, will also participate on the panel.
Prior to Lindevaldsen’s tenure at Liberty, she served as Senior Litigation Counsel to Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit litigation and education organization dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and traditional family. At Liberty Counsel, she was actively involved in efforts throughout the country to preserve traditional marriage through litigation, legislation, and constitutional amendments. She has spoken at numerous conferences, seminars, and debates nationwide and through Liberty’s Constitutional Litigation Clinic she continues to advance religious freedom, the sanctity of human life, and family values as she supervises students who are committed to restoring the moral foundations of law.
Additionally, Lindevaldsen and Mathew Staver, the Dean of Liberty University School of Law, filed the first lawsuit to oppose San Francisco’s challenge to California’s marriage laws, and obtained two orders enjoining public officials in New York from officiating same-sex unions.
Lindevaldsen began serving as the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for Liberty University School of Law on July 1, 2011.
