Liberty University School of Law’s Trial Team recently sent two teams to compete in the Regional Competition of the National Trial Competition. Although the teams did not advance to the semifinal rounds, they competed well with one team being eliminated only after second tiebreaker rules were applied, the second team nearly missed advance as they fell short by two points. The competition was sponsored by the Texas Young Lawyer’s Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers and was held at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The teams consisting of 2012 Juris Doctor candidates Brent Cole and Todd Shockley as Team One, and Everett Compitello and Ali Shubert as Team Two, were coached by Pamela Bell, Director of Trial Advocacy at Liberty University School of Law. “The two teams exhibited tremendous skill and professionalism during the competition. I was so proud to be with them and there is no doubt the teams were noticed both in and out of the courtroom for all the right reasons,” said Bell. Professor Bell joined the law school faculty in the fall of 2011.
“Our students and coaches put an enormous amount of work into their preparation and it most certainly paid off. This competition marked a first for the new Trial Team and they competed beyond expectation,” said Mathew Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law. “I would like to thank Professor Bell for her tremendous support and expertise in trial advocacy, as well as, thank Professors Kline and Lucas and Judge Spinden for presiding over practice trials. This was a great start to the new year and only marks the beginning for what is to come with Liberty’s Trial Teams.”
