For the third year, Liberty University School of Law will offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, a free service assisting qualifying taxpayers in the preparation of income tax returns. Volunteer Liberty law students staff the program and each volunteer is certified by the IRS to prepare income tax returns.

The VITA program will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm on January 31, February 1-4, and February 7-11, as well as from noon until 4 pm on Saturday, February 5, and Saturday, February 12, in the law school’s Mountain View Room. The program is not available on Sunday. No appointment is needed during these hours, but a limited number of appointments exclusive of the stated hours are available request.

The VITA program is available to low-to-middle-income taxpayers, generally defined as taxpayers earning $49,000 or less per year. Last spring, Liberty law students prepared over 100 income tax returns and volunteered close to 200 hours preparing the returns.

Mathew D. Staver, Dean of Liberty University School of Law, stated: “Our faculty and students are committed to providing pro bono legal services to those who need assistance with preparing their tax returns. The program has been very successful because of the commitment of our students. I am very proud of them for using their legal skills to help those in need.”

Of the 200 law schools that are approved (provisionally or fully) by the American Bar Association, Liberty is one of 20 featured in the ABA’s 2010-2011 VITA Participating Law Schools Veteran Sites list as a participant in the VITA Program.
