Saving: God’s Plan Over Our Plan

By: Jackson Parker

A life verse for me has always been Proverbs 16:9 which says, “a man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord determines his steps” (Prov. 16:9 HCSB). There have been countless times where I have relied on my own strength to make decisions or push through difficult seasons, without fixing my eyes upon Heaven. The plan God has for lives of those who are saved is far greater than anything our earthly mind can imagine. I like to think of saving as a circumstance where reliance upon God is essential. As a Peer Financial Coach with the Center for Financial Literacy, I have learned that money is a wonderful tool given to us by God. With that in mind, saving is a wise choice for anyone with an income. Giving and investing are amazing choices as well, but I am going to further expand on the importance of saving, and how it aligns with God’s plan for us.

If you have any source of income, creating a budget is a great first step in order to achieve your financial goals. Within your budget, money can go towards growing, owing, spending, saving, and giving. In regard to saving, below I have illustrated three key points:

  1. Certain types of savings accounts accrue more interest than others, which is important to look out for. It is crucial to research savings accounts with high interest rates. Sometimes your current bank or credit union will even have high interest accounts available for you to open. You would hate to miss out on a golden opportunity to gain a little extra!
  2. One must realize if they are naturally a spender or a saver. By saving, you create financial margin for yourself. If you are spending, you are in need of a budget. Neither one is a bad thing, you just have to recognize your habits before they get out of control.
  3. After a budget is created and your expenses are accounted for, you must determine your goals for the future. I highly encourage you to have a desire to set goals for yourself in order to eventually reach a state of true financial peace.

With these three steps for saving in mind, you can begin to paint a picture for yourself and for your future. The Center for Financial Literacy is here to walk through the saving process with you!

Always remember that God holds our future in the palm of His hand. He knows every step you will take even as you are reading this right now! What an outstanding encouragement it is to be able to find peace and rest in the loving-kindness of our caring Heavenly Father. Saving money is a wise decision. However, seeking the Lord in every financial decision is an even better decision, which pleases Him and His Kingdom.
