This spring Liberty University School of Law will participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the fifth consecutive year offering free assistance in income tax preparations to qualifying taxpayers.

In the past, Liberty Law has been the recipient of the American Bar Association’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Honorable Mention award for the achievements of its program. Liberty’s VITA program earned the award based on the number of taxpayers served as well as the remarkable achievement of 11 percent of the student body being involved in the program.

“The VITA Program is one of many ways Liberty Law students reach out to the community. The program has been very successful because of their commitment. I am very proud to see their legal skills in action helping those in need,” said Mathew D. Staver, dean of Liberty University School of Law.

Liberty Law students who staff the VITA program are volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In the past four years, nearly 800 federal and state income tax returns have been prepared while volunteers invested more than 400 hours.

This year, the VITA program will be held in the law school’s Mountain View Room. Dates and hours of availability are Feb. 11-15 and Feb. 18-22 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., as well as noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16 and Saturday, February 23. The program is not available on Sunday. No appointment is needed during thelisted hours.

The VITA program is available to low-to-middle-income taxpayers, generally defined as taxpayers earning $51,000 or less in 2012.
