Getting Prepared for Law School

The transition from undergraduate studies or another career into law school can be difficult. Law school requires a different writing style, raises time-management challenges, relies heavily on the Socratic Method, and often bases your entire grade on an end-of-semester essay exam. Our required nine-day orientation prepares you to meet these challenges. Here, you will hone your legal writing and reasoning skills and prepare to successfully participate in class discussions. In addition, you will also learn the following:

  • Basic legal terms
  • Exam-taking strategies
  • How to draft case briefs
  • How to create case outlines

Orientation also gives you the opportunity to meet the faculty, get to know your classmates and get to know the mentors who will support you throughout your first year. Your orientation schedule includes optional activities with your mentors, sessions taught by our faculty, and an ice cream social. The schedule also leaves time to address housekeeping issues like purchasing books, getting your Flames Pass, contacting the university’s IT Help Desk, and registering your vehicle. You will not need to purchase any textbooks for orientation. Prior to orientation, the first day’s reading material will be emailed to students. During orientation, a binder will be provided.
